Minutes from 8.12.09 Education Committee meeting

Agenda for DRNC Education Sub-Committee Meeting
7:30 pm – 8:30 p.m. Aug. 12, 2009, Mar Vista Family Center, 5075 S. Slauson Ave, Del Rey, California, 90230

Agenda
I. Call to Order and Roll Call (7:36 p.m)
- Eric Desobe; Marlene Savage, Theresa Luo, Chris Neville, Kathleen Miles, and Chris Neville
II. Welcome and Introductions
III. Reading of Mission Statement
IV. Planning of Tuesday, Oct. 6th event featuring Steve Zimmer (motion possible)
• Finalizing location and name of event
o Top choice is Marina Del Rey Middle School, will finalize
o Several ideas put out:
 “Stay or Go: Should I stay in neighborhood schools”
 Something focusing on how reforms are made at all levels of educational heirarchy, all the way up to school board member
 Something that would entice homeowners who don’t have kids to attend
• Brainstorm marketing strategies and assign outreach tasks
o Need ads in The Argonaut (two), flyers, speak out other neighborhood councils
• Identify partners
o Mar Vista and Westchester Neighborhood Councils; Homeowners Association, Councilman Rosendahl’s office
• Securing funds for food, signs, flyers, and outreach materials
o Motion made by DeSobe to send to Executive Committee: $750 to be allocated from Community Services budget for event. Seconded by Luo. Motion passes.
• Other comments:
o Ms. Savage worries that there will be too many events in October between Del Rey Day, EmpowerLA, and others and the “apathetic” nature of Del Rey constituents will mean low attendance. DeSobe suggested that Zimmer event will help publicize these other events and might encourage more participation in Del Rey Day. She also mentioned council held an education event two years ago of a similar nature.
o Chris Neville also concerned about crowded October schedule, especially conflict with Del Rey Homeowners General Meeting in late Oct. He also mentioned there was a similar education event two years ago. Also suggested need to consider how much to spend on marketing given possibility of low attendance.
o Ms. Luo suggested lengthing the time for the panel, shortening introductions, and focusing on what panelists have to say.
o Inserted into tentative event agenda: pledge of allegiance, DeSobe will introduce Mark Redick who will introduce Rosendahl if he attends.
V. Identifying contacts at schools for Del Rey to ensure “green” projects are submitted for contest
• Will move forward with recycling art projects from all Del Rey schools. Theresa Luo will connect Eric DeSobe with her contact from last year
VI. Grant proposal updates (tabled)
VII. Adjournment – motion made by DeSobe, seconded by Luo; passes (8:21 p.m.)
